New Grippers with steel and aluminum linear guides

The Zimmer Group has added a new pneumatic model range to its technology-leading 5000 series of premium grippers – in addition to the existing models with steel linear guides, versions with aluminum linear guides are now also available.

The peculiarity of the new gripper models is the aluminum linear guide making them particularly interesting for price-conscious customers who do not want to sacrifice Zimmer proven quality.
Technically, the GPP/GPD5000AL grippers exceed all T-slot grippers with their aluminum linear guides and are at least equal to grippers with multi-tooth guideance in the market environment. With its uncompromising quality “Made in Germany", Zimmer guarantees up to 15 million cycles without maintenance. The gripper series 5000 was designed for real universal use and provides a number of features depending on the model (pneumatic, pneumatic-electric, all-electric grippers speed, high gripping forces, large jaw length). Depending on the models, the grippers are available with a tightness class from IP40 to IP67 and can be exchanged with maximum accuracy for maximum system availability. Newly developed magnetic field sensors allowing to be inserted from the side. The sensors can therefore be easily exchanged without dismounting the entire gripper. Another advantage is that they do not protrude beyond the C-groove. The grippers can be mounted flush side by side. Compared to the predecessor sensor model, the switching characteristics are the same. ds

Five advantages of XXL industrial monitors

Industry 4.0 and smart factory concepts pose a number of challenges to production processes. Industrial monitors that are capable of displaying the extensive data of servers in a way that enables all parties to quickly grasp the most important information are a key element of stable production processes. Using Kontron as an example, we show the advantages of XXL monitors.

Advantage no. 1:
Everything at a glance

The XXL monitor’s larger screen area and higher re­so­lu­tion (with the option of Full HD or even 4K) makes it possible to display a comprehensive overview of the complete manufacturing line instead of merely a certain section. For example, Kontron equips its FlatView monitor line with a 75 inch screen diagonal XXL version. It allows displaying the manufacturing line in its entirety. Problems are no longer registered in a locally limited fashion, and problems can be identified early on even at other critical points of the production process.

Important details at the right time

The more “smart” a production process is, the more data it produces. This data can and should be used for gaining as much information as possible, ideally in real-time and both in the production hall and the control room. Therefore, XXL monitors are especially well suited as flexible Andon boards with extended functionality. In case of disruptions, the monitors will provide extensive, detailed information to help limit problems.

Also suitable for large distances

Traditional industrial monitors not only limit the section of the screen that can be displayed. Long-range legibility is a factor, too. Placing XXL monitors at central locations makes it possible to easily read the content displayed over large distances, thanks to their size and high resolution. Also, technologies such as Kontron’s WideLink simplify the connection to the signal output. It allows placing monitors up to 100 meters away from the signal source.
The transmission method includes the screen signal, the touch interface feedback as well as USB and audio signals and requires only a single connection via an Ethernet cable.

Fit for the paperless factory

But XXL monitors not only help displaying the data of complete production lines in a transparent manner, but also pave the way for the paperless factory. Instead of handling printouts, manuals and documents for a specific production order can be visualized centrally and for all to see on an XXL monitor. The centrally placed screen will always display the latest data, always freshly retrieved from a central server for all involved. Out-of-date and inconsistent paper files are a thing of the past.

Flexible for every use scenario

Industrial monitors need to meet a wide variety of requirements and usually need to be robust against shock, dust and water.
In practice however, there are great differences. The range of Kontron FlatView XXL monitors reaches from having a certain resistance against light environmental influences to devices that are completely sealed, feature protective glass, and protected from dust and strong water jets.

In addition, the monitors need to be easy to read even in poor lighting conditions, and optionally equipped with a touch screen able to be operated with gloves. XXL monitors in general are nearly maintenance-free, having been designed without moving or wearing parts.

As an alternative to bare monitors, XXL Panel-PCs are available as well, whose performance can be configured according to their field of application.

Industrial HMI – robust protection against environmental influences

Panel PCs are called for whenever “intelligence” is needed right at the monitor. Dependent on the application, systems of different power are needed, which at the same time require integrating into the local infrastructure. For industrial-grade HMI, it’s not all just about resistance to dirt, water, vibration and other ambient factors. The Panel PCs also needs to fit in well with the existing OT and IT environment. To this end, it has to adhere to common standards, especially when it comes to networking and security. Networking can be handled through Gigabit Ethernet connections, or through WiFi. For individual customer solutions, Kontron can draw on existing standard configurations and various standardized functional blocks to swiftly create customized systems at attractive conditions for every purpose.
This principle also simplifies the rapid provision of prototypes for new environments, minimizing the design risk at the same time. In most cases, only minor modifications are required to solve a concrete task.
For example, versions with stainless-steel front and variants for 19“ rack mounting are already available as a standard. In addition to the products based on industry standards, Kontron implements customer specific models. Wire-ready replaces the third hand

Weidmüller OMNIMATE® Power BUF 10.16 provides a safer and more efficient device connection for power electronics. The PUSH-IN connection technology and the wire-ready function speed up conductor connection.

The current trends in power electronics: Maximum performance capability combined with greater efficiency. The devices have to be convincing, both from their technical and economic performance.
They also have to combine high functionality with simple operation - this is particularly important for the wire connection. This needs to be performed safely and efficiently.

All of this has a direct influence on device connectivity. As a made-to-measure solution, Weidmüller offers its OMNIMATE Power BUF 10.16 PCB plug-in connectors with PUSH IN connection system and wire-ready function. The well-dimensioned PUSH IN connection system is equipped with a settable operating lever (pusher) to create an open contact point, i.e. wire-ready. This contact system achieves a considerable time saving in wire connection.

Fast wiring

The open wire-ready contact point simplifies the connection of stranded wires without wire-end ferrules and wires with particularly rigid insulation, which are often inflexible. The PUSH IN contact is closed after plugging the wire into the contact point by releasing the locking clasp. When using cables without wire-end ferrules or with a small cross-section, the settable pusher is also advantageous. It keeps the contact point open after activation, which enables the technician easy and convenient handling of conductors with short stripped off cable sheath or stiff insulation. The convenient PUSH IN function is retained with this innovative contact system; moreover, the settable contact point allows trouble-free connection even under adverse conditions. In simple terms: The wire-ready connection replaces the third hand or other tools in fiddly installation situations.

Single-hand safety interlock

The female header OMNIMATE Power BUF 10.16 is equipped with a single-hand safety interlock, designed as a middle flange. The middle flange is safely and reliably snapped into place automatically without the need for operator intervention. Integration of the signal contacts independently of the installation width reduces the amount of space needed on the device and PCB. Intuitive plugging is possible in a single step – even without sight and under difficult installation conditions. Optionally, Weidmüller offers a variation with screw attachment, which the user can select according to the application. The new female header in 10.16 mm pitch allows rational and tool-free wiring for conductor cross-sections of 2.5 mm2 (single wire) to 16 mm2 with wire-end ferrule (AWG 12 …4) at a rated voltage of 1000 Volt (IEC), 600 V (UL) and a rated current of 76 Ampere (IEC). The conductors for connection can be single- or stranded-wire versions, with or without wire-end ferrules. Simply plug them in using the PUSH-IN connection system.
OMNIMATE Power BUF 10.16 is available in various versions and numbers of poles: laterally closed; with flange; with screw/clip-on flange, these variations are all available in two to five-pole design. The laterally closed variations with middle flange or middle screw flange are available in two, three and four-pole versions.

Motek trade fair news from Dynetics

At the Motek in Stuttgart, the international trade fair for automation in production and assembly, Dynetics (Hall 8, Booth 8236) presents an extensive range of ball screw drives, stepper motors, multi-axis motion controllers and controller ASICs for stepper and servo motors.

High precision ball screw drives and thread spindles

Ball screw drives are the preferred thread spindles in industrial and precision machines. A ball screw drive, also ball spindle called is a mechanical linear drive that rotates in linear motion with little friction. It consists of a ball screw, a ball thread nut in which the balls are integrated, and a ball-return.
The manufacturer KSS is regarded as a specialist for high-precision ball screw drives. In 2001 KSS has developed the world's smallest ball screw, which scores with a shaft diameter of only 1.8 millimeters and a compact, clutch-free ball spindle.

Ball screw drives from KSS combine high efficiency and accuracy. KSS offers a wide range of ball screw drives, especially for applications requesting a minimum of internal friction and an exact run, together with a low drive torque and a high stiffness. The production of these quality products is done at the Niigata Prefecture plant in Japan.

Compact stepper motors with 28mm flange

Stepper motors are often used for positioning tasks. The driver electronics is inexpensive and each control pulse creates a step with a defined rotation angle. Stepper motors have several advantages: they offer step-by-step position and work with an open loop. At low speeds they already develop a high torque and the speed control is done directly via the step frequency.
Nidec Servo, for years a successful supplier of high-quality stepper motors, has expanded its portfolio with two new, very compact models, enabling developers and designers to move to new areas of application where compact footprints previously could not use stepper motors. The new KH28xx series of stepper motors are compact ball bearing Hybrid stepper motors, available with bipolar or unipolar windings, and a torque of resp. up to 165 mNm at a step angle of 1.8 °.
These stepping motors are used mainly wherever a small and compact design, simple and exact positioning and high speeds are important, as is the case in biomechanics or medical technology, in laboratory equipment or in increasingly compact handling. Applications are among other things small pumps or dosing devices, dialysis, or analysis equipment or microscopic where the compact stepper motors can be placed in the device and thus allow the construction of a more compact microscope.
The stepper motors with flange 28 mm, are manufactured with bipolar or unipolar windings, and are available in 3 lengths. Holding torques from 85 up to 165 mNm (bipolar), 65 up to 120 mNm (unipolar), allow a wide range of applications. We can offer several options for controlling these steppermotors, like as an ASIC, as a board or in a module; in single-axis or up to 6 axes.

The KV42 and KF42 Hybrid stepper motors show a more compact size

With the KV42 and KF42, Nidec Servo is expanding its range of hybrid stepper motors (flange 42 mm) with a step angle of 1.8°. Thanks to the optimized design of the rotor, the two stepper motor rows have high performance in a smaller housing than conventional stepper motors of the same class.
Instead of 48 mm, the stepper motors are now only 42 mm long. Versions with former 42 mm length are now 39 mm long, etc. The KF42 offers a higher torque. Other advantages include higher limit torque, more holding torque, high speed, minimum running noise, precision winding, high rigidity and improved motor dynamics. The series is available in five different sizes.
According to the manufacturer, the engines of the KV42 and KF42 series thus show the highest power density in their class. The motors are manufactured in versions with plugs or free cable ends. For larger quantities, the supplier can make mechanical adaptations to the respective application on request.

Standalone multi-axis motion control

Many motion control applications have several motors that can be controlled simultaneously. These and other features are supported by the new PMX series controllers from NPM.

The PMX series is a powerful motion controller family for 2- and 4-axis systems
The module is a fully programmable multi-axis control solution for applications with high data transfer rates over Ethernet connection or with a USB 2.0 and RS-485 interface. The new PMX Multi Controller offers more flexibility for your applications in just one device and can control not only stepper motors, but also up to 4-axis servo motors or positioning stages in any combination. The system offers easy-to-use, cost-effective multi-axis motion programming for laboratory tests, and industrial applications. A basic-like programming language was designed for easy control of applications with up to four axes.
NPM's PMX series of advanced controllers is available in two versions for 2 or 4 axes. They consist of:
• PMX-2ET-SA for 2-axes, and PMX-4ET-SA for 4-axis control with an Ethernet connection

Controller ASICs for stepper and servo motors

The PCL6000 series is a user-friendly family of CMOS ASICs for motion control applications. For example, the ASICs have a built-in pre-register (one stage), a up and down counter and two comparators per axis, a linear interpolation function for any number of axes, encoder connection, servomotor interface and integrated general feedback and control. The PCL6100 series ICs are available with 8/16-bit parallel bus or 4-wire serial bus. The maximum output frequency of up and down counters is up to 15 MPPS, the ICs also support high resolution and a large stroke with linear motor control.
The functions of the IC can be controlled with simple commands and thus relieve both the CPU and the user. The ICs are compatible with traditional 8/16-bit buses and new serial data bus systems.

The PCL6100 controller series is suitable for controlling stepper and servo motors
If the serial interface is used, the parallel bus can be used as GPIO (General Purpose I/O Port). Extensions are possible up to 4 LSIs with a slave select signal. The IC impresses with linear interpolation of 2 to 4 axes, maximum output frequency up to 15 MPPS, two up and down counters, and four comparators (two of which are reserved for a software limit switch). Advanced features include linear interpolation, fully customizable linear and S-curve acceleration/deceleration, pre-storage for continuous motion, direct override of acceleration or target position, anti-vibration control, integrated homing routine, automatic ramp setting, 18 different directly addressable modes, and much more.

New: PCL6115 Evaluation Kit

The PCL6115 is the latest ASIC version of the powerful PCL6100 series for single axis control. Compared to the PCD series, this chip supports more functions. The maximum frequency is 15 Mpps. Linear motors with high resolution are also supported. NPM has developed an evaluation kit based on the PCL6115. The EVAL kit also includes a PM stepper motor with gear (PFCU30-24V4GM with step angle of 1.25° and 1/12 ratio). Commissioning of the Evaluation Kit is uncomplicated. ds

The challenge

Existing factory infrastructure is aged and inefficient, often using multiple separate systems based on software platforms as old as the buildings they operate in. How can a manufacturing company significantly reduce the cost and complexity of system management, maintenance, safety, and security? Additionally, how can factory personnel monitor and measure processes as they occur and take action immediately when intervention is required?

The solution

VxWorks

VxWorks is a real-time operating system used in more than 2 billion devices in industrial, medical, transportation, and defense solutions. It provides a small footprint and enables deterministic applications scaling from very small compute packages to complex manufacturing systems and avionics systems. It works on the major processor architectures ARM®, x86, and PowerPC. Using VxWorks hypervisor virtualization technology, it enables virtual machines (VMs) to run independent security, control, and other applications in independent operating system environments.

Hypervisor technology

The VxWorks hypervisor is a real-time, embedded, Type 1 hypervisor. It can manage unmodified guest operating systems running in VMs in devices targeting a broad range of market segments, including medical, industrial, transportation, and defense. The VxWorks hypervisor can manage independent VMs running VxWorks, Wind River Linux, and other unmodified guest operating systems such as Windows and Android. With these capabilities, system developers can consolidate and reliably run multiple applications – such as control management, data analytics, safety-critical and non-safety-critical applications, and legacy applications – all on a single system.

Additionally, the hypervisor can securely partition a VM running a safety-critical application to ensure that there is no interference or conflict from any other VM. This virtualization platform can be the foundation for a workload consolidation industrial solution at the edge.

Wind River Linux

Wind River Linux is the embedded operating system of choice for IIoT software developers who want a combination of open source flexibility, commercial grade reliability, and support to help minimize the total cost of ownership. Wind River Linux delivers vital components for the productization and commercialization of any IoT device. Within a VxWorks workload consolidation solution, a Wind River Linux VM can be established to run Linux applications, such as communications.
