Direct drives with linear motors

Thanks to its performance and efficiency, such as thrust, speed, acceleration and uniform positioning accuracy, linear motor technology is seen as a solution for a wide range of applications. Nippon Pulse Motors (NPM) introduces a new series of integrated linear shaft motors specifically for the vertical Z-axis function in applications with very limited space. This series has been specifically designed to realise the vertical Z function and features high energy magnets for more power combined with a very compact and efficient counterweight (patent pending). The motor unit does not fall off when de-energised, thanks to its new and revolutionary solution for the desired counterweight. The linear motor unit is based on NPM's SX060 series and has virtually no magnetic leakage flux, allowing applications with a mutual distance of only 9 millimeters. The motors reach stroke lengths of 40 millimetres.

Direct drive
without cogging torque

In order to realise a compact and cost-effective design, this scaleless linear shaft motor also eliminates the need for an external encoder. Basically, the linear shaft motor is a direct drive motor that works very precisely and is free of cogging torque.
It consists of a shaft with rare-earth iron-boron neodymium permanent magnets and a rotor made of cylindrical coil windings. There is no iron in the shaft or in the coil area of the motor, which ensures high precision and latch-free motors motors.

The coils form the core and thus give the motor its rigidity. Linear servo motors operate without contact. Since the coil wraps completely around the magnets, the magnetic flux density is used effectively. This allows a large (0.5 mm) ring-shaped nominal air gap. This air gap is not critical, in the sense that there are no changes in force.

Thanks to its cylindrical design, the linear motor generates 100 percent of its power in the direction of travel while providing effective heat dissipation. The iron core also ensures large absorption forces between the stator and coil and results in no cogging torque in the linear motion.
