What is called a
compact ball screw?
This term generally indicates that the spherical nut has an internal recirculation, which gives it a smaller
outer diameter. (Hence, the term compact.) Despite their name, compact designs often include spindles with
diameters of up to 25 millimeters – much larger than conventional miniature ball screws.
What is called a
miniature ball screw?
In the case of miniature ball screws, the spindle can be manufactured by either rolling or grinding the screw
threads. Spindle diameters below 8 millimeters are usually produced by grinding, although some manufacturers
offer these spindles up to 6 millimeters in diameter in rolled versions. In some ways, miniature ball screws correspond to their larger standard versions. For example, miniature ball nuts are offered in many of the same designs as standard ball nuts, or with a spindle end for easy assembly.
The ball recirculation can be done inside the ball nut or with external recirculation methods. Lead accuracy and preload classes follow the same designations, regardless of the screw shaft diameter. Specifications such as lifetime (L10 calculation), buckling load and critical speed are the same for miniature and standard ball screws.
Applications and usages
Miniature ball screws are efficient linear components in a small format and are therefore ideal for small applications where precise movement of small loads is essential. They offer particular advantages in equipment for laboratory, semiconductor and medical applications, such as medical diagnostics, test and measurement stations, as well as in engraving and printing processes, but also for a range of applications that include pumping liquids or pick-and-place applications.Proven manufacturer
Since 1964, KSS has been successfully operating as a specialist for highly precise ball screws and lead screw products. In 2001, KSS developed the world's smallest sub-miniature linear ball screw, with a shaft diameter of only 1.8 millimeter and a compact, backlash-free ball screw. ▪ ds
