Managing bottlenecks in the supply chain

How MASS ensures the ability to deliver industrial computers

Since 1989, MASS has mostly used computer platforms for our machine controls instead of conventional PLC technology because the latest innovations are available here. Since then, one of the company's main concerns has been to offer its customers a short-term repair service so that production downtime is avoided in the event of defects.

The longest possible service support for customers should also be ensured so that the electronics do not become obsolete before the machine mechanics. It is therefore important to avoid using components with recognisably short availability or from manufacturers with uncertain long delivery times.
The statement "End of Life" is the worst for individual products. Countermeasures must be taken in good time here! This situation has been causing problems for all companies in the industry lately. Since the beginning of the Corona crisis, the delivery times for some CPUs, displays, graphics, B&B and communication functions have increased sharply and have reached deadlines of 6-12 months!
The most common procurement problems are with computer mainboards, displays, touch screens and individual interface modules.
To avoid such unbearable waiting times, MASS has increased its engineering to design alternatives to products that are no longer available. Purchasing was also expanded internationally in order to gain access to (mostly Far Eastern) manufacturers.
This enables MASS to modernise its systems, some of which are more than 10 years old, to make them further usable, and products from other suppliers can also be replaced by MASS. This is also possible if new housings, board formats and fastening elements are required. For series applications of such components, MASS has considerably expanded its stock so that its customers (if they plan the quantities reasonably reliably) can continue to be supplied reliably.
